Abortion, unmet need, and family planning service provision among gynecology patients in Ghana.

Abortion, unmet need, and family planning service provision among gynecology patients in Ghana.

$49.99

Background. Despite abortion being legal, complications from induced abortion are the leading cause of maternal mortality in Ghana.;Aims. The aims of this research are (1) to explore the pathways to unsafe abortion, (2) identify correlates of women with induced abortion complications, and (3) evaluate the effectiveness of group as compared to individual family planning counseling among gynecology patients in Ghana.;Methods. The data for this study come from two teaching hospitals in Ghana, Komfo Anokye in Kumasi and Korle Bu in Accra. Qualitative data were collected from postabortion patients, male partners, family planning nurses, and obstetricians/gynecologists on the pathways to unsafe abortion. Baseline data were collected on women with pregnancy-related complications—correlates of induced abortion complications were examined. A randomized, noninferiority trial was conducted among gynecology patients to assess whether group family planning counseling was as effective as individual family planning counseling.;Results. Men are seen as the primary force in fertility decisions—men may either control fertility directly through ‘orders’ to abort or indirectly by denying responsibility. Some women opt to not disclose the pregnancy to their male partners to ensure that their fertility desires are met. Health providers may be barriers to safe abortion in this context.;Women with induced abortion complications were more likely to report they were the main decision-makers on household items and were less likely to disclose the incident pregnancy to their male partners as compared to women whose pregnancies ended through spontaneous abortion or other pregnancy complications.;Group family planning counseling is noninferior to individual family planning counseling. Measures assessed include intention to use family planning after the most recent pregnancy and knowledge of modern contraceptive methods.;Conclusions. The results of this study indicate that the pathway to

Breastfeeding with Confidence: A Practical Guide

Breastfeeding with Confidence: A Practical Guide

$0.99

Breastfeeding with Confidence is a practical guide to breastfeeding designed to take the mystery out of the process and provide new mothers with the practical skills and insights they need to be successful. Author Sue Cox explains both the art and the method of breastfeeding, and addresses the fact that making milk comes naturally, but breastfeeding is a learned skill. When many mothers-to-be are asked if they’ll breastfeed, they often answer, “I will if I can.” Cox counters that answer proactively and positively with information, advice, support, resources and encouragement for new mothers.Breastfeeding with Confidence provides:- Accessible information in an easy-to-read and easy-to-understand format- Answers to any questions mothers could have about breastfeeding- Illustrations to help mothers with how to position their baby – Symbols that label key information (the key symbol highlights pointers to becoming a skillful and loving mother, the male symbol indicates items that may particularly interest the father, the apple symbol denotes healthy actions, and the cross symbol is for emergency aid.)- Work pages for mothers to take notes and track progress- Helpful “things to do” suggestions as a proactive approach to solving problems- Stories and comments from breastfeeding mothers, with lots of reassuring advice and information.iParenting Media Awards 2007 Excellent Product Winner: ParentingUSABookNews.com 2006 Finalist: Parenting/Family: Pregnancy & Childbirth

 Dick's Picks, Vol. 1: Tampa, FL 12/19/1973

Dick’s Picks, Vol. 1: Tampa, FL 12/19/1973

$20.98

Named after the Grateful Dead’s vigilant vault keeper Dick Latvala, the Dick’s Picks series ultimately encompassed three dozen entries spanning 23 years (1968 — 1991) of live concert recordings. Inside the debut installment are over two hours of highlights from the band’s final 1973 gig (December 19) at the Curtis Hixon Convention Center in Tampa, FL. With a surfeit of options to inaugurate the ongoing project, Latvala cited his desire to disseminate items that were “lesser known” by Deadheads and to reveal the sonic splendor of the opener “Here Comes Sunshine” when asked the reasons that he chose this specific date to christen Dick’s Picks. It was clear that the entire evening could not be presented on two CDs. Therefore, Latvala — with input from a variety of sources, notably bandmember Phil Lesh (more about that in a moment) — selected representatives from the first and second sets. Deadhead purists were initially displeased that the concert had been condensed and/or resequenced. Meaning, they wanted every note. In addition to the sublime “Here Comes Sunshine,” a potent “Weather Report Suite” and “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo” are worthy of investigation. The former for its incisive instrumental explorations, while the latter is notable for the conspicuous absence of the typical “Upon the Rio Grande-O/Upon that lazy river” refrain. The late 1973 lineup of the Grateful Dead is minus contributions from Donna Jean Godchaux (vocals) — whose final trimester of pregnancy was not conducive to life on the road. A further point of contention between connoisseurs of the music was the out and out hatchet job done to “Playing in the Band” at the behest of Phil Lesh (bass/vocals). A caveat of including the performance was the removal of his bass solo. The centerpiece of disc two is 50 minutes of vintage, uninterrupted and nonstop musical interaction from participants Jerry Garcia (guitar/vocals), Keith Godchaux (keyboards), Bill Kreutzmann (percu…

 Folklore from Kansas: Customs,Beliefs,Superstitions

Folklore from Kansas: Customs,Beliefs,Superstitions

$19.95

A major contribution to the heritage of the Great Plains region, this volume is a compilation of over 7,000 separate items, relating to the folk customs, beliefs, and superstitions of Kansas. More than 2,000 people, representing every county in the state, were interviewed during a fifteen-year survey conducted by Koch and his assistants. Individuals of all ages contributed material that has lived in oral tradition for decades—items ranging from superstitions about when to hold a wedding ceremony to remedies for hiccups and warts. The collection is particularly strong in farming and ranching material and cowboy and rodeo lore. Included are rules to protect one from harm, to ensure good luck, and to help predict the future. The pages are rich with holiday customs, ethnic lore, and beliefs concerned with rites of passage. A listing of general subject areas reveals the wealth and range of material collected: courtship and marriage; pregnancy, birth, and infancy; the prevention and cure of illnesses and injuries; death and funeral customs and beliefs; people; making wishes; the significance of dreams; luck; the weather; animal signs; plants and planting; animals, birds, and insects; and hunting and fishing. Interestingly, more than half the items are related to the categories of health, weather, and luck. Folk beliefs make fascinating and delightful reading. If a possum hangs by its tail in the moonlight, the persimmon tree won’t bear persimmons. If you want curly hair, shave your head, then place slices of onion on the bare skin. Boil an egg, fill the space of the yolk with salt, go to bed, and whoever you dream about will be your future marriage partner. When you see a load of hay, make a wish and turn away. If an east wind blows on a baby’s bare chest, he will always have stomach trouble. Taken together, they illustrate a pseudo-scientific rationale for understanding life and nature. This volume contains twenty-four photographs and an

Japanese translation and cultural adaptation of the U.S. ''Listening to Mothers-II'' questionnaire.

Japanese translation and cultural adaptation of the U.S. ”Listening to Mothers-II” questionnaire.

$49.99

To date, there have been inadequate measures of the impact of rapidly changing perinatal care from the perspective of Japanese women. This study developed a survey that measures Japanese women’s experience from planning pregnancy through early postpartum. The U.S. “Listening to Mothers-II (LTM-II)” questionnaire was translated and culturally adapted.;Based on the U.S. Census Language Translation Guidelines, methods included: review of the literature, use of multiple professional expert panels in the U.S. and Japan, translation by a bilingual committee, and two phases of cognitive interviews with 20 postpartum Japanese adult women. Content validity and equivalence of the translated questionnaire were assessed.;The number of problems with the translated questionnaire effectively decreased in the iterative process using feedback and revisions to achieve the fifth and final translated version. Most problems were found in the question interpretation stage of cognitive processing, and about half of the interpretation problems were wordings/tone. Culture-specific concepts and unclear items were adapted to prevent ambiguous or erroneous interpretations in future studies. Women preferred in-person interviews to other modes of data collection for future studies.;Results supported the validity of translation and cultural adaptation of the LTM-II questionnaire for Japanese women within two years after birth, in rural and urban environments, and with varied education and income levels. Questions were revised to capture Japanese women’s experience and facilitate cross-cultural comparisons. The future dataset will be useful for professionals interested in developing evidence-based practices and improving health care services.

Psychosocial Adaptation to Pregnancy: Seven Dimensions of Maternal Role Development

Psychosocial Adaptation to Pregnancy: Seven Dimensions of Maternal Role Development

$75.99

The proposed book presents an original analysis of seven dimensions of maternal psychosocial development during pregnancy that serve as the foundation for assessment of maternal prenatal adaptation and for psychoeducational and counseling intervention to enhance maternal adaptation. The seven dimensions of maternal adaptation pertain to motivation for and acceptance of the pregnancy, processes involved in evolving a maternal role prenatally, changes in significant kin relationships (with husband/partner and mother), and preparatory emotional, physical, and adaptive processes for labor and delivery. The dimensions were predictive of maternal anxiety in labor and progress in labor (or length of labor and prolonged labor), as well as postpartum maternal adaptation to a motherhood role and selected aspects of early infant development. Assessment is based primarily on analysis of maternal responses to in-depth interviews. The approach is a scientific analysis of maternal adaptive and maladaptive responses within each psychosocial dimension with excerpts of maternal responses to illustrate differences in adaptation. The scientific basis of assessment and analysis distinguishes this approach from other general and subjective approaches. This is relevant because prenatal counseling intervention often is not scientifically based. For example, it is commonly stated that ambivalence during pregnancy is normal. However, we have determined that this is not always the case. High ambivalence late in pregnancy is considered tantamount to rejection; it is not normal. In addition to prenatal interview schedules and rating scales, the author has developed psychometric instruments with items that parallel the responses made by expectant women in interviews. These instruments can be used as a stand-alone assessment or to supplement and validate interview responses. The Interview Schedules, Interview Rating Scales, and a description of two psychometric assessment scales (The Prenatal

Sex and Gender Issues: A Handbook of Tests and Measures

Sex and Gender Issues: A Handbook of Tests and Measures

$173.86

This handbook is a companion volume to Beere’s Gender Roles: A Handbook of Tests and Measures, which describes 211 measures pertaining to gender roles and attitudes toward gender-related issues. Sex and Gender Issues extends the Gender Roles’ coverage, describing 197 scales usable in research and applied settings. The measures relate to the following topics: heterosocial relations, sexuality, contraception and abortion, pregnancy and childbirth, somatic issues, homosexuality, rape and sexual coercion, family violence, body image and appearance, eating disorders, and other scales. In preparing these handbooks, Beere thoroughly searched the literature in psychology, sociology, education, and related disciplines and identified 1,450 measures. For this handbook, she selected 197 measures that are relevant, have evidence of reliability or validity, and were used in more than one published article or ERIC document. If a scale did not satisfy these criteria, but its development is the focus of an article or ERIC document, it is included. Unusual scales and those pertaining to a topic that would otherwise receive inadequate coverage are included as well. The scale descriptions follow a standard format that includes information such as title, author or authors listed in the earliest publication mentioning the scale, earliest date that the scale was mentioned in a publication, variable measured, type of instrument, description, sample items, previous subjects and appropriate subjects, information regarding reliability and validity, and a listing of published studies that used the measure. Sex and Gender Issues is the most up-to-date compendium of these tests and measures and will be welcomed bysocial science researchers, students, and teachers. It is a necessary addition to university libraries, research centers, and to the private collection of researchers in relevant areas.
